In June of 1998, the first Benefit Gala was dampened by wind and rain in an effort to raise $30,000. Christianne and Francesco Ricchi, who were first year parents, shared the details of the fundraising efforts of celebrity chefs in Washington, DC. Debbie Cowan, another Riverview parent, was also instrumental in the formation of what was to become the Village of Dreams Gala, which is supported by parents, friends and the community.
In June of 1999 the auction raised over $100,000 under the direction of Chris and Debbie, with the support of the School’s Advancement Office. As the years progressed, so did the success of the event. Riverview has been able to raise over $4 million from the Gala. The 2006 the Benefit grossed $649,000 and supported the School's Technology Initiative and the construction of a new dormitory. The 2007 Gala grossed $615,000 for the enhancement of Riverview's arts program. In 2010 the Gala netted over $500,000 and in 2011 we raised approximately $540,000, a new record. 2012 was another tremendous year and we have great expectations for 2013.
The Gala has been held under a large tent in the center of the campus and is usually attended by over 400 guests. The food, perfected by Cape Cod chefs is a big draw. A recently added oyster bar (donated by "Chopper" of Wellfleet) and a Cork Pull are popular components of the evening. The auction is entertaining with many wonderful and unusual items up for bid. Over the years, the funds raised from this yearly event have been used to complete construction of McKelvey and Trulaske Halls; furnish the campus Wellness Center; update the school’s communication and technology systems; supply library carts to all residences; provide scholarships; and support Cafe Riverview and the Arts.
The 15th annual 2013 Village of Dreams Gala will be held on Friday, June 14th and the theme is It's Showtime at Riverview!
