Riverview began our Mindfulness Program in the fall of 2014 
with a 5 minute meditation at the beginning of each school day. Some student's also use audio CD's in their dorms to help quiet their minds and center themselves whenever they choose.

     “Good morning Riverview. Welcome to morning meditation. The theme today is ‘hope.’ Let’s take a moment to relax.  Breathing in, breathing out, closing your eyes, listening to the music, letting go.” Teacher Stefanie Patterson’s soothing voice guides students and faculty in a peaceful meditation via the Riverview intercom system.
     
    Meditation mornings began more than two years ago at Riverview and have since become regular practice. Each morning, from 8:27 to 8:30, the 3-minute guided meditation helps students to be “calm and focused,” “relaxed,” “not worried,” and “stress-free for the whole day.”

  • Mindful Update

    This year, Riverview is continuing with our mindfulness initiative with the whole school participating in morning meditation, offering yoga/meditation classes after school, and teaching mindfulness techniques to our students. We are also including more mindfulness/meditation in the dorms, and beginning a few pilot groups in school that will participate in expanded mindfulness practices. We're off to a great start!

    • Yoga/Mindfulness is an after-school activity being taught by Mr. Donohue, with Ms. Summers as his assistant. Both GROW and Middle/High School students have participated. Mr. Donahue has taught his "Life Skills" program in the inner city schools of New Bedford for 17 years, and he is just amazing with kids. His humor, kindness and complete acceptance of their individuality enables them to test their limits, and gain confidence in their abilities. He also teaches them very concrete, effective ways to calm themselves when feeling stressed.
